[Old French fum from Latin fumus smoke, and Old French fume, from fumer from Latin fumare: see FUME verb.]
I. Now usu. in pl.
The volatile matter produced by combustion; smoke. Now usu., odorous or fragrant smoke from burning tobacco, incense, diesel fuel, etc. LME.
Dickens The fumes of choice tobacco scent the air. L. T. C. Rolt Reeking with the fumes of spent gunpowder.
b. Something producing aromatic vapour. M16-E18.
An odour emitted from or by a substance or object. LME.
A. C. Swinburne The fume of the flowers of the night.
A vapour or gas (esp. a harmful or irritant one) given off by an acid or volatile substance. Formerly also, vapour given off by a substance when heated. LME.
Jonathan Miller A patient who developed a spectacular tremor..as the result of breathing in mercury fumes.
b. A watery vapour, steam, or mist rising from the earth or sea. Now rare. M16.
