Canterbury bell(s) [with ref. to the bells on pilgrims' horses], a southern European bellflower, Campanula medium, grown for ornament; any of several native British bellflowers. Canterbury gallop, Canterbury pace, Canterbury trot, etc., the pace of mounted pilgrims; a slow easy gallop (cf. CANTER noun2), trot. Canterbury hoe: with three prongs attached to the handle at right angles. Canterbury tale a story told on pilgrimage (orig. one of those in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales); a long tedious story.
