[A subcontinent, and a country occupying much of that subcontinent, in southern Asia.]
Used attrib. to designate things made in, associated with, or imported from the subcontinent of India, or the present Republic of India, or (Hist.) pertaining to the East India Company or the government of India under British rule (1858-1947). Cf. INDIAN adjective 1. M17.
India House Hist. the office of the East India Company in London. India ink (now N. Amer.) = Indian ink s.v. INDIAN adjective. India Office Hist. the department of the British Government dealing with Indian affairs. India paper (a) a thin paper orig. imported from China, used for high quality prints and illustrations; (b) a thin tough opaque printing-paper, used esp. for bibles. India proof an artist's or engraver's proof specially printed on India paper. See also INDIARUBBER.
