A philosophical and religious system based on Platonic ideas and originating with Plotinus in the 3rd cent. AD, which emphasizes the distinction between a supposed eternal world and the changing physical world, and combines this with a mystic possibility of union with the supreme being from which all reality is supposed to derive.
