Newton's law, any of various physical laws deduced or formulated by Newton, esp.: (a) Newton's law of gravitation, a law stating that any two bodies exert an attractive force on each other which is proportional to the product of their masses, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; (b) Newton's laws of motion, three fundamental laws of classical physics, the first stating that a body continues in a state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless it is acted on by an external force, the second stating that the rate of change of momentum of a moving body is proportional to the force acting to produce the change, and the third stating that if one body exerts a force on another, there is an equal and opposite force (or reaction) exerted by the second body on the first. Newton's rings, a set of concentric circular fringes seen around the point of contact when a convex lens is placed on a plane surface (or on another lens), caused by interference between light reflected from the upper and lower surfaces. Also sing. when used attrib. M19.
