Religious mysticism based on the teaching of the Spanish priest Miguel de Molinos (c 1640-97), rejecting outward forms of devotion in favour of passive contemplation and extinction of the will; gen. (usu. quietism) any (esp. spiritual) system or philosophy emphasizing human passivity and non-resistance. L17.
(quietism.) A state of calmness and passivity of mind or body; repose. L18.
