verb trans. Use or grant use of (land etc.) for pasture for a stated time or at a certain rate. LME-E17.
verb trans. Orig., admit (livestock) for a stated time into a forest. Later, take in (livestock) to remain and feed at a certain rate. L15.
verb intrans. Of livestock: remain and feed for a stated time etc. rare. L16.
verb trans. Charge (land or its owner) with any public burden. L17.

estrus (sh)




Period in the sexual cycle of female mammals, except the higher primates, during which they are in heat (ready to accept a male for mating).

Some animals (e.g., dogs) have only one heat during a breeding season; others (e.g., ground squirrels) will come into heat repeatedly during the breeding season until impregnated. During estrus the female secretes pheromones that signal her receptivity to the males; her genital area may become swollen, and she may also give behavioral signals.
