A luminous phenomenon, often taking the form of variable streamers or resembling drapery, seen in the upper atmosphere in high northern or southern latitudes, and caused by the interaction of charged solar particles with atmospheric gases, under the influence of the earth's magnetic field; orig. with specifying adjective (see below). aurora australis either of the auroras of the polar regions, the northern or southern lights.
