A poem (orig. for singing with accompaniment) of one or more triplets of stanzas having 7, 8, or 10 lines, each usu. ending with the same refrain line, and an envoy; more gen., a poem divided into stanzas of equal length, usu. of 7 or 8 lines. Also collect., poetry of this form. LME.
ballade royal = rhyme royal s.v. RHYME noun.
Music. An extended, usu. dramatic, piece usu. for the piano. M19.
