[Sense 1 perh. from Anglo-Norman var. of Old French chambril lath; sense 3 prob. rel. to Welsh cambren crooked tree, bent stick, swingletree, butcher's cambrel, etc., from cam crooked (see CAM adjective & adverb) + pren wood, stick. Cf. GAMBREL.]
