[Old French came(h)u, camahieu (mod. CAMAIEU): cf. medieval Latin camahutus etc. Later infl. by Italian cam(m)eo, corresp. to medieval Latin cammaeus.]
A small piece of relief-carving in onyx, agate, etc., usu. with colour-layers, the lower of which serves as ground; a relief design of similar form. LME.
A short literary sketch or acted scene; (more fully cameo part) a small character part in a play, film, etc. M19.
Comb.: cameo glass a decorative glass consisting of layers of different colours, the outermost being cut away to leave a design in relief; cameo part: see sense 2 above.
