Ecclesiastical.
A member of an order of clergy living in a clergy-house or within the precincts of a cathedral etc. in accordance with the canons of the church. ME.
canon regular, regular canon: living according to a rule and so renouncing private property. secular canon: not living according to a rule.
Each of the resident ecclesiastics responsible, under the dean, for a cathedral. M16.
honorary canon a titular non-residential non-stipendiary member of a cathedral chapter. minor canon, petty canon a member of the clergy who assists in the daily service of a cathedral but is not a member of the chapter.
