[Latin from Greek kholera; in late Latin taking over the meanings of Greek khole bile, anger.]

2. a. gen. Any of various ailments involving severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Freq. with distinguishing word (see below). obsolete exc. Hist. E17.
With distinguishing words (now largely obsolete exc. Hist.): Asiatic cholera = sense 2b. cholera infantum = sense 2a, b. epidemic cholera = sense 2b. summer cholera = cholera infantum above.
b. spec. A dangerous infectious disease, endemic in Asia, which is caused by intestinal infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and is characterized by severe vomiting and diarrhoea leading to dehydration. E19.
3. chicken cholera, fowl cholera, infectious pasteurellosis of fowls (orig. thought to coincide with cholera epidemics). L19.
