clerestory noun. Also *clearstory. LME.
[from CLEAR adjective + STOREY: cf. Anglo-Latin historia clara.]
The upper part of the nave, choir, and transepts of any large church, containing a series of windows, clear of the roofs of the aisles, admitting light to the central parts of the building. LME.

A raised section of a railway-carriage roof, containing small windows or ventilators. Chiefly US. L19.
Comb.: clerestory window: with no crosspiece dividing the light.
