[Old English clafre = Middle & mod. Low German, Dutch klaver, from Germanic. First syll. corresp. to Old Saxon kle, Old High German kleo (German Klee).]
A. noun. Any of various leguminous plants constituting the genus Trifolium, with white, pink, etc., flowers in crowded heads and with trifoliate leaves; esp. any of several such plants grown as fodder, T. repens (more fully Dutch clover, white clover), T. pratense (more fully red clover), and T. hybridum (more fully ALSIKE clover). Cf. TREFOIL. OE.
