Medicine. A prolonged state of unconsciousness from which the patient cannot be roused. Formerly also, an unnatural heavy sleep.
Comb.: coma vigil (a) a prolonged state of drowsiness in which the patient nevertheless cannot sleep; (b) a state in typhus fever etc. in which the patient lies unconscious but with eyes wide open.
