Search for hidden water, mineral deposits, etc., by passing a forked stick or rod over the surface of the ground under which it is hoped to find them, so that it might dip suddenly when brought over the right spot.
Comb.: dowsing-rod a forked stick or rod which is held in the hands and passed over the surface of the ground in dowsing; also called divining-rod.
