[Late Latin eccentricus adjective, from Greek ekkentros, from ek- EX-2 + kentron: see CENTRE noun, -IC.]
A. noun.
Astronomy. A circle or orbit not having the earth precisely in its centre. Now Hist. LME.
A disc or wheel mounted eccentrically on a revolving shaft so as to transmit a backward-and-forward motion (esp. to the slide-valve of a steam engine) through a linkage consisting of a ring (or strap) and connecting rod. E19.
A person whose behaviour is habitually unusual or whimsical. M19.
b. adjective.
Of a circle: not concentric with another (foll. by to). Of two or more circles: not mutually concentric. M16.
b. fig. Having little in common. Only in 17.
Of orbital motion: not referrable to a fixed centre; not circular. Of a curve or orbit: deviating from a circular form. E17.
That has its axis, point of support, etc., not centrally placed. Of an axis etc.: not passing through the centre, not central. M17.

b. (attrib. use of the noun.) Worked by or connected with an eccentric (sense A.2 above). E19.
