Formerly, any of various marine algae. Now, one that is edible, esp. (more fully purple laver) Porphyra umbilicaulis. E17.
Comb.: laver bread a Welsh Food made from the fronds of Porphyra umbilicaulis, which are boiled, dipped in oatmeal, and fried.
