A. adjective.
Of a person: fit and liable for defensive military service. Formerly also, of arms or armour: able to be used for defence. Chiefly Scot. obsolete exc. Hist. ME.
b. Hist. Of a military force: composed of soldiers liable only for home service. L18.
Of a fortress, town, etc.: able to be defended; well-fortified. L16-E19.
