ferrite noun. M19.
[from Latin ferrum iron + -ITE1.]
1. A mixed oxide of ferric iron and another metal or metals; spec. a compound of formula MFe2O4 (where M is a divalent metal), many examples of which have magnetic and electrical properties which make them suitable for use in high-frequency electrical components. M19.
2. Metallurgy. An allotrope of pure iron which has a body-centred cubic crystal structure and is present as a solid solvent in low-carbon steels. L19.
3. Petrography. A microscopic particle of amorphous iron oxide present in a rock. L19.
