fipple noun. E17.

A complete or partial plug at the head of a wind instrument, esp. a partial plug at the head of a recorder, whistle, etc., leaving a narrow channel for air; the narrow channel itself.
Comb.: fipple flute a flute which is played by blowing endwise.
