Orig., a tube, casing, cord, etc., filled or saturated with combustible matter for igniting a bomb, blasting-charge, etc. Now also more widely, any device or component designed to detonate the explosive charge in a bomb, mine, warhead, etc., after an interval of time, or under set circumstances such as impact.
