(An honorific for) a head of a Jewish academy in Babylonia, Palestine, Syria, or Egypt, from the 6th to the 11th cents. Later, esp. in Spain, France, Italy, and Lithuania, an outstanding Talmudic scholar. Also gen., a genius, a prodigy.
