[Old English garleac, from gar spear (with ref. to the cloves of the plant) + leac LEEK.]
A bulbous plant of the lily family, Allium sativum, grown as a herb; the strong-smelling pungent-tasting bulb of this plant (divisible into cloves or smaller bulbs) much used as a flavouring. Also (with specifying word), any of various wild plants of the genus Allium.
bear's garlic, crow garlic, field garlic, hedge-garlic, Spanish garlic, etc. wild garlic any of various wild alliums, esp. ramsons, Allium ursinum.
