An amorphous yellowish or colourless transparent tasteless substance, brittle when dry, which is derived from collagen and obtained by prolonged boiling of animal skin, tendons, ligaments, etc., and is used in food preparation as the basis of jellies, in various photographic processes, and in glue; also, any of various substances containing or resembling gelatin. vegetable gelatin a constituent of gluten, identical with gelatin from animal sources.
Any of various gelatinous explosives; esp. (more fully blasting gelatin) a high explosive chiefly consisting of a gel of nitroglycerine with added cellulose nitrate, used esp. under water. L19.
