[Old French gille, gelle, in medieval Latin gillo, gillus, gellus, late Latin gello, gillo water-pot.]
A measure of liquid or (in Britain) dry capacity, containing a quarter of a pint: in Britain (more fully imperial gill) equivalent to 8.67 cu. in. (0.142 litre), in the US (more fully US gill) equivalent to 7.22 cu. in. (0.118 litre). Also local, half a pint, esp. of wine, beer, etc. ME.
A container having the capacity for such a measure. rare. LME.
