A very large flatfish of the N. Atlantic, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, fished intensively for food; any of several closely related fishes, esp. (more fully Pacific halibut) Hippoglossus stenolepis and (more fully Greenland halibut) Reinhardtius hippoglossoides. Also, the flesh of any of these as food.
