(The hard tough wood of) any of several trees of the genus Carpinus, of the birch family, resembling the beech, esp. the European C. betulus and the N. American C. caroliniana.
hop hornbeam either of two trees of the genus Ostrya (O. carpinifolia of southern Europe, O. virginiana of N. America) related to the hornbeam (so called from the resemblance of the ripe catkins to hops).
