[mod. Latin (see below) from Latin = IMPATIENT, with ref. to the readiness of the capsules to burst open when touched.]
Any plant of the genus Impatiens (family Balsaminaceae), the members of which bear irregular spurred usu. showy flowers and include the garden balsam, I. balsamina, and the busy Lizzie, I. walleriana. Also called balsam, touch-me-not.
