a. Not having the characteristics of living organisms; inanimate; not composed of or derived from living matter. L18.
b. Chemistry. Orig., of, pertaining to, or designating substances not derived from or found in living organisms. Now, of, pertaining to, or designating substances which do not contain carbon (except in some simple cases: see note below). Cf. ORGANIC adjective 4b. M19.
