[Greek suffix forming the fem. of adjectives ending in -ites, combined with (expressed or implied) nosos disease, to form names of diseases affecting a specified part of the body.]
Forming nouns denoting diseased states or symptoms, esp. involving inflammation, affecting particular parts of the body, as appendicitis, bronchitis, peritonitis, tonsillitis, etc. Now also occas. (colloq.) forming nouns denoting a state of mind or tendency that is compared to a disease, as telephonitis.
