A neutral hyperon (or its antiparticle) which has a mass 2183 times that of the electron, a spin of 1 / 2, and zero isospin, and on decaying usually produces a nucleon and a pion; orig. also, any of several similar charged hyperons. Microbiology. A bacteriophage originally isolated from Escherichia coli, used in genetic research. Freq. written &blambda;. M20.
Comb.: lambda point Physics (a) the temperature (approximately 2.18K) below which liquid helium in equilibrium with its vapour is superfluid, and at which there is a sharp maximum in its specific heat; (b) any temperature at which the specific heat of a substance exhibits similar behaviour (freq. written as &blambda; point).
