[Old English lempedu (cf. Old High German lampfrida) from medieval Latin lampreda, -rida limpet: see LAMPREY.]
Any of various marine gastropod molluscs with a shallow conical shell and a broad muscular foot that sticks tightly to rocks; esp. (more fully common limpet) Patella vulgata. OE.
b. fig. A clinging person. E20.
In full limpet bomb, limpet mine, etc. A type of explosive device attached magnetically to a ship's hull. M20.
