marquis noun. Also marquess, (esp. in titles) Marquis. ME.

In some Continental countries: orig. (now Hist.), a ruler of certain territories (originally marches or frontier districts); later, a nobleman (or, in the 16th and 17th cents., a noblewoman) ranking below a duke and above a count. ME.
(Now usu. marquess.) A British or Irish hereditary nobleman of the second rank of the peerage, below a duke and above an earl. LME.
