[Perh. repr. Old English word cogn. with Old High German muniwa (translating Latin capito a large-headed fish) but infl. by Old French menuise, from Proto-Romance word meaning 'small objects': cf. MINUTIA.]
A small freshwater cyprinid fish, Phoxinus phoxinus, common in streams, lakes, and ponds in Europe. Also loosely, any small (esp. cyprinid) fish; dial. a stickleback. LME.
