A rope, anchor, etc., by or to which a ship, buoy, etc. is moored; spec. a set of permanent anchors and chains laid down for the mooring of a ship etc. Freq. in pl. M18.
The place in a river or harbour where a vessel can be moored. Usu. in pl. M18.
Comb.: mooring-mast: see MAST noun1 2; mooring-post (a) a post fixed into the ground for mooring a boat etc. to a landing-place; (b) a piece of wood in the deck of a large ship to which moorings are fastened; mooring swivel a swivel used to shackle two chains together in mooring.
