A wild variant of the cultivated olive, Olea europaea var. sylvestris, with thorny branches and small unproductive fruit. Also, any of several small southern European trees of the genus Elaeagnus (family Elaeagnaceae), resembling the oleaster in their narrow silvery leaves.
