Any of various large leguminous trees of the genus Pterocarpus, esp. P. soyauxii of W. Africa, P. dalbergioides of the Andaman Islands, and P. macrocarpus of Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand; the reddish hardwood obtained from any of these trees, which resembles rosewood.
