pl. (treated as sing. or pl.). The extensive treeless plains of S. America south of the Amazon. Also in sing., these plains considered collectively; any one of these plains. E18.

America; pampas-grass a very tall grass, Cortaderia selloana, with silky panicles of a silvery hue, native to S. America and grown elsewhere as an ornamental plant.
