A pungent hybrid mint, Mentha piperita, with lanceolate, often red-tinged leaves and spikes of lilac flowers, cultivated for its essential oil. L17.
a. The essential oil of peppermint; any of various preparations made from this oil, characteristically having a pungent aromatic flavour leaving an after-sensation of coolness, and chiefly used as a flavouring or for various medical purposes (also oil of peppermint, peppermint oil). Also, a cordial or liqueur flavoured with peppermint. M18.
b. A sweet flavoured with peppermint; spec. = peppermint cream, peppermint-drop below. E19.
c. Any of various colours, esp. pale green, associated with peppermint-flavoured drinks or sweets. M19.
More fully peppermint-gum, peppermint-tree. Any of several Australian eucalypts, esp. Eucalyptus amygdalina and E. piperita, which yield an aromatic oil like that of peppermint. L18.
