verb trans. & intrans. Physics. Cause the vibrations of (light or Other electromagnetic radiation) to be restricted, wholly or partially, to a particular direction. E19.

the largest island of the Malay Archipelago (=a group of many islands) in southeast Asia. Part of it belongs to Malaysia and part of it to Indonesia, and it also includes the Sultanate of Brunei . Its population is 12.5 million (1991).
