[French polygamie from late Latin polygamia from ecclesiastical Greek polugamia, from polugamos often married, polygamous, formed as POLY- + -GAMY.]
Marriage with several spouses, or more than one spouse, at once; the practice or custom by which one man has more than one wife, or one woman has more than one husband, at the same time. L16.
b. Zoology. The habit of mating with more than one, or several, of the opposite sex. E19.
Botany. The condition of being polygamous. rare. Only in L18.
