Consisting or of the nature of rheum. LME-L17.
Of a disease, symptom, etc.: orig., characterized by rheumy or catarrhal discharges; now, pertaining to, of the nature of, or characteristic of rheumatism. LME.
rheumatic fever an acute fever, chiefly of young people, caused by a streptococcal infection and marked by acute inflammation and pain of the joints.
b. transf. & fig. Tearful. Also, phlegmatic. Only in 17.
Of weather, a place: orig., inducing catarrhal infections; later, tending to induce or exacerbate rheumatism. LME.
