Any of numerous shrubs or low trees constituting the genus Rhododendron, of the heath family, widely cultivated for their showy, clustered, funnel-shaped or bell-shaped flowers of varied colours; spec. an evergreen shrub or tree of this kind, esp. the purple-flowered R. ponticum of Asia Minor etc. (Cf. AZALEA.) E17.
