I.
Hist. A gold coin of the later Roman Empire, originally worth about 25 denarii. Formerly also, in medieval England, a shilling. ME.
An oblique stroke formerly written to separate shillings from pence, and now used in writing fractions, to separate figures and letters, or to denote alternatives or ratios. Cf. VIRGULE 1. L19.
II.
A line or surface in a binary or ternary phase diagram respectively, or a temperature (corresponding to a point on the line or surface), below which a mixture is entirely solid and above which it consists of solid and liquid in equilibrium. E20.
