Causing contraction of organs or tissue; harsh, acid, or raw to the palate. Now usu., astringent (lit. & fig.). LME.

b. noun. A substance which promotes contraction of tissue; an astringent; now spec. a substance which checks bleeding, a haemostatic drug etc. LME.
