A fastening or coupling device enabling an object fastened to it to turn freely on it or one part to revolve without turning another. ME.
N. Gordimer He..tried the aerial at every angle its swivel allowed.
b. spec. A pivoted rest for a gun, esp. on the gunwale of a boat, enabling it to turn horizontally in any direction. L17.
In full swivel-gun. A gun or cannon mounted on a pivoted rest so as to turn horizontally in any direction. E18.
A small shuttle used in ribbon-weaving etc. Also swivel shuttle. L19.
