The branch of physical science that deals with the relations between heat and Other forms of energy (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.).
first law of thermodynamics the physical law to the effect that in a closed system the sum of all forms of energy remains constant (conserved), and that in an open system the increase of internal energy is equal to the sum of the work done on the system and the heat added to it. second law of thermodynamics the physical law stating that heat may not of itself pass from a cooler to a hotter body, entropy always being increased during an irreversible process. third law of thermodynamics Nernst's heat theorem (see NERNST noun 3).
