[Old English (Northumbrian) til preposition with dat. = Old Frisian til (with dat.), Old Norse til (with genit.); prob. from adverbial use of Germanic noun meaning 'aim, goal' (cf. TILL verb1) repr. by Old English till fixed point. Cf. UNTIL, UNTO.]
